Eachofthefourareasofreportinghasarepresentative
notebooktabcontainingavisualenvironmentforthe
creationandconfigurationofcomponentswithinthatarea.
Theresultsofeachareathenbecomeinputstothenext
area:datafeedsintocalculations,calculationsfeedinto
componentswithinthereportlayout,andthereportlayout
isrenderedintoapreviewofthereport.The
implementationusedbyReportBuilderEnterpriseforeach
areaofreportingisdescribedbelow.
Data
WithintheworkenvironmentoftheDatatab,enduserscan
quicklycreatedataviews,whichcanthenbeusedtosupply
datatoreports.Dataviewsareusuallycreatedviathe
QueryWizardorQueryDesigner.Bothofthesetoolsare
visual;theyalsoallowtheendusertoselectthetables,
fields,searchcriteria,andsortordernecessaryforthe
report.Behindthescenes,anSQLstatementisgenerated
andusedtoretrievethedatafromthedatabase.Ascreen
shotofacompleteddataviewisshownbelow.
Thesolutiondescribedaboveisthestandardbehavior
withinthedataworkspace.However,thedevelopercan
customizethisuser-interfacebydoingoneofthreetasks:

1.Registerareplacementquerywizardorquerydesigner.
2.Removethequerywizardorquerydesigner.
3.Createnewdataviewtemplateclassesthatcansimplify
thedataselectionprocessevenfurtherbyestablishingthe
relationshipbetweenthetablesinthedatabaseand
presentinganalternativeuser-interface(suchasasingle
formthatallowssearch/sortcriteriatobeentered).
ThebottomlineisthattheDataareacontainsaturnkey
solutionthatcanbeusedout-of-the-box,butif
customizationsareneeded,anarchitecturehasbeen
providedsothatthosecustomizationsarepossible.
Calc(RAP)
TheCalcworkspaceisusedtomanagetheRAPcode
associatedwiththeReport.TheCalcworkspacecontainsa
treeviewofthereport,allthebandswithinthereport,
andalltheobjectswithineachband.Whenabandor
componentisselected,alltheeventsforthatcomponent
areshowninalist.Theusercanthenselectaneventand
codetheeventhandlerinthesyntax-sensitivecodeeditor
atthebottom.ThefollowingscreenshotshowsanOnPrint
eventascodedforaLinecomponent.
ThisscreenshotshowstheCalcworkspaceinitsmost
feature-richandcomplexconfiguration.Developmentwork
completedherecanbepassedontoenduserssothatthey
canmodifyit,lockeddownsothatenduserscanonlyview
it,hiddencompletelysothatendusersdonotknowitis
there.Themostscaled-downversionoftheCalctabis
providedbythedialogonlyinterface,wherenoCalctab
existsatall,andasinglesyntax-sensitivecode-editor
dialogisaccessiblefromtheCalculations?menuoptionof

behind-the-scenesarchitecturehasbeenmadehighly
scalableinordertomeetthevariousneedsofdevelopers.

TheDesignworkspacecontainstheactuallayoutofthe
report.Theuser-interfaceisidenticaltotheone
presentedtodevelopersusingReportBuilderatDelphi
design-time;inotherwords,itisfull-featuredand
professional.TheOffice97interface-stylemakestheDesign
workspaceespeciallyeasytolearnforendusers.AReport
Wizardisavailableforcreatingreportsquickly.Youcan
customizethisinterfacebyreplacinganyofthedialogsit
usesandbyregisteringyourownreportwizards.
Preview
ThePreviewworkspacecontainstherenderedreport.The
reportcanbeprintedtotheprinterortovariousfile
formatsfromthisworkspace.
